What is MCP, and why do SEOs need to know about it?

MCP stands for Model Context Protocol. Anthropic open-sourced it in November 2024 as a standard way for AI assistants to connect to external data sources and tools — rather than relying entirely on what you paste into the chat window. The official documentation describes it as a USB-C port for AI: just as USB-C standardized how devices connect to each other, MCP standardizes how AI models connect to software, databases, and APIs.

Before MCP, getting AI to analyze your site required you to export data manually, copy it into a prompt, and explain the context — every single time. MCP inverts that relationship. Instead of you bringing data to the AI, the AI can request the data directly as part of answering your question. The connection is persistent: once configured, it does not reset between sessions.

The protocol is not proprietary to one AI company. In March 2025, OpenAI adopted MCP across its Agents SDK and Responses API, describing it in official documentation as an open protocol for extending AI models with additional tools and knowledge. Cursor lists MCP support in its official documentation. Claude Desktop, VS Code, and Amazon Q IDE all appear on the official MCP client registry at modelcontextprotocol.io. As of early 2026, the protocol has released multiple versioned specifications with documented backwards compatibility, and the TypeScript, Python, Java, and Kotlin SDKs are maintained in the official modelcontextprotocol GitHub organization.

For SEOs, the practical implication is one thing: AI tools that support MCP can call a live tool — "fetch the top 25 queries for this domain in Google Search Console" — and get a real answer from current data, not a hallucinated one based on training cutoff. The AI knows what it does not know, and it asks the MCP server instead of guessing.

Why MCP changes SEO workflows

Before MCP, an SEO wanting Claude to help prioritize which pages to fix first would open Google Search Console, set date ranges, apply filters, hit the 1,000-row export limit in the UI, download a CSV, copy the relevant columns, paste into Claude, type a context paragraph explaining what the site sells and what the columns mean — and only then ask the question. How That SEO Agent uses MCP: 44 tools, 4 data sources, one connection

That SEO Agent is built as a native MCP server — not a dashboard that added MCP as an afterthought. The entire product is the server. It exposes 44 tools across four data sources: Google Search Console (performance data, URL inspection, sitemaps, anomaly detection, cannibalization, quick wins), Google Analytics 4 (traffic, AI-referral detection, realtime), PageSpeed Insights (Core Web Vitals, field and lab data), and a live site crawler (technical audit, on-page signals).

Because it is an HTTP-based remote MCP server, setup is a single configuration block copied into Claude Desktop, Cursor, or any other MCP-compatible client. There is no local process to run, no Python environment to maintain, and no per-session authentication to repeat. The connection authenticates via an API key issued from the dashboard — one key, persistent access.

Each tool does one thing precisely. gsc_search_analytics returns query, click, impression, CTR, and position data with filtering by date, country, or device. gsc_inspect_url returns indexing status, crawlability, and last crawl date for any URL in your property. pagespeed_insights returns both field data (real user metrics) and lab data for any URL. None of these require you to explain to the AI what the data means — the tool descriptions are embedded in the MCP protocol layer, so the AI reads them as part of deciding which tool to call.

The practical effect: when you ask Claude "which of my blog posts are worth updating based on traffic trend and current rankings," it does not ask you to clarify what you mean by traffic or ranking. It calls the GSC performance tool, the GA4 traffic tool, compares them, and returns a ranked list — with the actual numbers from your site, not generic advice based on industry averages.

Does this work with Claude, ChatGPT, and Cursor, or just one of them?

It works with any application that supports MCP as a client. Claude Desktop and Claude Code support MCP natively since the protocol's launch in November 2024. OpenAI added full MCP client support in its desktop app and developer API in 2025, documented officially at platform.openai.com. Cursor lists MCP support in its official documentation. Why not just export a CSV and paste it into Claude?

The export-paste workflow has three structural problems. First, Google Search Console's interface caps exports at 1,000 rows; pulling more requires scripting directly against the API. Second, exports are static — the AI reasons on a snapshot that may not reflect the current state of your rankings. Third, the process introduces selection bias: you choose what to export before you have asked the question, so the AI is working on a pre-filtered view of your site. With an MCP server, the AI requests exactly the data it needs to answer your specific question, with no intermediary export step.

What data does the MCP server access? Can it write anything to my accounts?

The server accesses read data from Google Search Console (performance reports, URL inspection results, sitemap status), Google Analytics 4 (traffic metrics, session data), and PageSpeed Insights (Core Web Vitals scores). It also runs a live HTTP crawler against your site for on-page and technical signals. The server does not write to your GSC or GA4 accounts — it cannot submit URLs for indexing, modify properties, or alter any data. Authentication uses OAuth scopes limited to read access.

Is MCP a stable standard or is it likely to change significantly?

MCP was open-sourced by Anthropic on November 25, 2024, and the specification is maintained as an independent open standard. As of early 2026, the protocol has released versioned specifications with documented backwards compatibility policy. OpenAI, Google, Microsoft, and Amazon have all shipped production implementations.
